Everyone needs a cheerleader!

January 4th, 2011 by Mandy 2 comments »

I am very good at a lot of things…but can improve so many others. After receiving a very heartfelt text from my niece last night…I was painfully aware of just how inherently selfish I really am. I get the text, I see her name and instantly think the worse, she needs something and I’m tired. WHY OH WHY does everyone need something? Then she pours out her heart about something totally unrelated to me. She just needed me to listen. Why hadn’t that crossed my mind? Why hadn’t I conversed with her in the last three days or initiated contact with HER to see how SHE was doing? With her, or my other nieces or nephews, or cousins, or parents….or spouse. GROUPON, that’s why. But that’s not a good enough excuse.

So I’m going to be a cheerleader! You know the type. The one always rallying for others. Always cheering them on and encouraging…I can certainly improve in that area. Can you? I used to send greeting cards…monthly for birthdays or just because or for simply no reason at all. I didn’t even get Christmas cards out this year. But I do have New year’s cards nearly finished! (Go Mandy Go!)

I have three siblings in THREE STATES. While I think of them often, I rarely reach out to them to see how they are doing. I have the desire, just not the time. I cannot believe I just said that. Lame, huh? I think so too. So I’m going to change it. They are going to get sick of hearing from me. As are my parents and grandparents. I’m going to wear them out. They are going to wonder if I am dying!

Who can you cheer for? Buy a card, put a stamp on it. Pick up a phone, dial a number. Lift a spirit. Calm a nerve. Warm a heart. Make them wonder if you are dying. Start today.

Some of my favorite cheerleaders are people that I barely even know…a friend’s wife on facebook who does such extraordinary things for her husband…I’ve met her once but she didn’t know until now that she inspires me. Daily. So thank you Jenny Burkett! You are one amazing woman and I am blessed to know you, even if only on facebook.

Crying…over a vacuum cleaner

December 31st, 2010 by Mandy 10 comments »

I came home today to find a note from Fedex indicating they had placed an item on my side steps.  I round the corner of the house to see a vacuum cleaner box.  Immediately I think, “who on earth bought me a vacuum cleaner?”  Upon further inspection, it is addressed to Mama’s Own Green Cleaning.  I open the packing slip to find a note from Hoover…thanking us for our service to the organization “Cleaning for a Reason.”

I cried.  Thinking about it now brings tears to my eyes.  Then my husband came home and I cried some more.

THANK YOU HOOVER!

We are so honored to be partnered with such a wonderful organization, to be able to provide free cleaning services for women undergoing the treatment of cancer.  We are the ones who are thankful and will continue to be the hands to serve those in need as long as there is a need.

Want to help us help others?  Become a CHAMPION for our organization…by doing so, you allow us to do what we do for as many as possible for free.

A Christmas Prayer

December 25th, 2010 by Mandy No comments »

Loving Father,
help us remember the birth of Jesus,
that we may share in the song of the angels,
the gladness of the shepherds, and worship of the wise men.

Close the door of hate
and open the door of love all over the world.
Let kindness come with every gift
and good desires with every greeting.
Deliver us from evil by the blessing
which Christ brings,
and teach us to be merry with clear hearts.

May the Christmas morning make us happy to be thy children,
and Christmas evening bring us to our beds with grateful thoughts,
forgiving and forgiven,
for Jesus’ sake.
Amen.

~Robert Louis Stevenson

2 more days…the true meaning of Christmas

December 23rd, 2010 by Mandy No comments »

And while they were there, the time came for her baby to be born.  She gave birth to her first child, a son.  She wrapped him snugly in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the village inn.  That night some shepherds were in the fields outside the village, guarding their flocks of sheep.  Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared among them, and the radiance of the Lord’s glory surrounded them.  They were terribly frightened, but the angel reassured them.  “Don’t be afraid!”  he said.  “I bring you good new of great joy for everyone!  The Savior – yes, the Messiah, the Lord – has been born tonight in Bethlehem, the city of David! And this is how you will recognize him:  You will find a baby lying in a manger, wrapped snugly in strips of cloth!”  Suddenly, the angel was joined by a vast host of others-the armies of heaven-praising God:   “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and peace on earth to all whom God favors.”  When the angels had returned to heaven, the shepherds said to each other, “Come on, let’s go to Bethlehem!  Let’s see this wonderful thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”  Luke 2: 6-15

And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in Swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. ~Luke 2:7 New King James Version

The star appeared to them, guiding them to Bethlehem.  It went ahead of them and stopped over the place where the child was.  When they saw the star, they were filled with joy!  They entered the house where the child and his mother, Mary, were, and they fell down before him and worshiped him.  Then they opened their treasure chests and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Matthew 2:9-11

3 ways to do away with holiday guilt

December 22nd, 2010 by Mandy 1 comment »

So you didn’t get your holiday cards out in time….your brother’s gift is still sitting on the table , you haven’t bought your father-in-law anything.  Turns out that sending Aunt Sally’s gift is going to cost more than the actual gift.

SO WHAT?

For somehow, not only at Christmas, but all the year through, the joy that you give to others is the joy that comes back to you.  ~John Greenleaf Whittier

CHANGE IT:  Send “Happy New Year” Cards with a photo of your family on Christmas morning.  You can order them online and get them in an hour at Wal-Mart, CVS or Walgreen’s.  But then again, we’re not much on conformity…and we wouldn’t have it any other way!  You can also send an array of free electronic cards.

BUY IT:  As far as the gift you haven’t bought yet, there is still time…and you can always grab any number of gift cards at nearly any local retailer or even buy and print them on online.

SHIP IT ANYWAY:  Ship it, stick a note on it.  If you’re anything like us…our family is used to New Year’s Cards and belated gifts!

Address the New Year’s Cards, ship the gifts, lose the guilt.  No one is perfect!

7 days/7 ways to STOP, relax and enjoy the holidays

December 18th, 2010 by Mandy 2 comments »

Take time to teach your children about the reason for the season. Don’t get so caught up in the hustle and bustle that you yourself forget!  Schedule time for yourself.

STOP and get a pedicure (ok, taking my own advice on that one!) Remember, you can usually get these at a local beauty school for less than $15.00! And how else are the pedicurists of the future going to learn?  Here is my favorite school in Evansville.

STOP and buy the roses…or whatever flower(s) you choose. You will be reminded to slow down, to take a moment to breathe, to enjoy this season each time you see them.

STOP and help those in need. Make donations to a local charity as a “gift” to someone who has everything. Involve your children in charitable acts of kindness, have them donate toys/clothes/shoes in order to make room for what Santa is bringing.

STOP and start a new tradition. Next year we are totally doing the ugly sweater exchange…I’m going to start shopping for those right away! Then I’ll just stash them away with the Christmas decorations so I don’t forget this intention.

STOP and exercise. Squeeze into the gym before the resolutionists (did I make that word up?) take over. If you plan to make fitness a resolution, go try out various gyms to see which one is going to fit your needs. Consider their child care schedule and fees and gauge whether or not you are going to enjoy their equipment, classes, training, etc. Do not get roped into a contract. A lot of gyms are offering month to month memberships so shop around for what suits your lifestyle.  I know that Tri-State Athletic club is running a special~join in December, no payment until February. This means if you join now you get a month and a half FREE.  Ask for Stacey, tell her I sent you!

STOP and personally make contact with loved ones near and far.  Call them, write them a heartfelt thank you or send them a note about something they had done for you long ago.  Any ole’ memory will do!

STOP…just STOP.

8 days to WRAP it! Here are some green wrapping alternatives…

December 17th, 2010 by Mandy 1 comment »

Let’s face it.  Wrapping the gift is half the battle, and sometimes half the cost of the original gift!  I have often wondered why we pay so much just to present a gift…Imagine what you could do with all of the money you spend on wrapping paper, tape, bows, etc.!  Now imagine using something useful instead….something as simple as a handkerchief, a dish towel, or hand towel maybe even a t-shirt, sweatshirt or scarf?  Any fabric scrap will do, use your imagination!  Tie it with twine, a ribbon or something else cute and inexpensive and planet friendly.   I recently stocked up on clearance monogrammed kitchen towels @ Kohl’s for $1.80 each to wrap  a ton of individual gifts with.   What a find!
